A memorial Ceremony honoring Don Mustain will be held 11AM Friday, January 28, 2022 at the Rivercrest Chapel in Bixby. Don passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, January 18, 2022 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was 62 years old.
Born October 19, 1959 in Tallahassee, Florida, Don was the son of Donald and Sally (McCue) Mustain. Along with his siblings, David and Holly, Don was raised primarily in Miami, Oklahoma where he graduated with the Class of 1977. An academic at heart, Don loved to read and excelled in school.
Following high school, Don attended the University of Oklahoma. He absolutely loved everything about the Sooners – especially football! Don loved all kinds of history, earning his B.A. in History from OU. He also completed several courses at the graduated level while in Norman.
Don met the love of his life, Frances, at the First Christian Church in Miami. They began dating and were married June 14, 1985 in Grove. The ceremony was held at Frances’ parent’s home on Grand Lake.
Don worked in the insurance industry most of his career, primarily in the Claims division of State Farm. He was deployed to Iowa on business at the time of his passing.
Intelligent, witty, and level-headed are words that would best describe Don’s personality. He was a magnificent son, husband, father, and led a life completely devoted to his family. According to his sons, Michael and John, his sound advice saved them from trouble on many occasions.
Don loved to play golf anywhere there was a tee time, even when he was travelling on his job assignments. In addition to his avid reading, he also loved listening to podcasts. In fact, he could read a book and listen to a podcast simultaneously while retaining both perfectly. Don loved to grill and barbeque for his friends and family. Don was also a phenomenal shot in basketball. He loved playing card with family and friends, always knowing the cards you were holding after the first hand in a game of Pitch!
Loved by everyone he ever encountered, Don’s memory will be eternal among a host of family, close friends, and business associates.
Surviving family members include his wife, Frances; his two sons, Michael Mustain and his wife, Angie, and John Mustain and his wife, Anna; grandchildren, Carlie, River, and Archer; his mother, Sally Gatewood and her husband, Larry; his sister, Holly Becker and her husband, Steve; additional siblings,Jennifer Davis and her husband, David, and Ryan Gatewood and his wife, Tobie; his father's wife, Carmen; his brother David’s family, many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who have remained close since childhood.
Don was preceded in death by his father, and his brother, David Mustain.
