Born March 14, 1951, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Deborah Ann Rainwater was the second of five children gifted to Cleo Felix and Freda Sylvetta (Potts) Rainwater. The young Rainwater family would make a move from Oklahoma to California where Debbie would spend her formative years. It was in California that she met and married David Mitten. The couple would pick up and move as his military service directed – even spending some significant time in Hawaii. Eventually, they welcomed a son, Edward, and determined to raise him in Oklahoma near Debbie’s parents.
Fond memories of Oklahoma have been and will continue to be cherished and remembered by the family – especially Eddie. It was upon moving to Oklahoma that they joined Debbie’s parents on the farm in Eldon Valley, south of Tahlequah. Living in that area, they were able to make and enjoy frequent trips to the Illinois River and to ‘Betsy Walker Hole’. Later, Debbie would settle in the greater Tulsa area – living in Broken Arrow, Bixby, Glenpool, and Sapulpa through the years. During this time, she spent several years working in the medical profession and even attended nursing school.
When she wasn’t at work, Debbie loved spending time with her family – especially her grandchildren who were her biggest love. Debbie has been described as caring and as vintage - a word that helps to illustrate her reluctance to embrace technology. The only breakthrough to this predicament came when Debbie received an Alexa device as a gift. This avenue allowed her to listen to her favorite music and gave her some form of steady conversation. Eventually, some even went as far as to say that Alexa became Debbie’s best friend! In addition to this, Debbie enjoyed watching TV and certainly knew the Game Show Network backwards and forwards.
Debbie passed from this life unexpectedly on Monday, August 15, 2022. She was 71. She will be missed by a host of family and friends who loved her dearly.
She is survived by: her son, Edward Mitten and his wife, Darla; three grandchildren: Joshua Whittenberg, Carly Whittenberg, and Tanner Mitten; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Rodney Rainwater; a sister, Lori Rainwater; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends including Chuck Bock.
Debbie was preceded in death by: her parents and by two brothers: Gerry and Daniel.
