Bobby Leland Jones passed from his earthly dwelling to his permanent home on Sunday, November 28, 2021 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark Twain Jones and Lenora Alma Jones. Bobby is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jo Jones, his three children; Mark (Lisa) Jones, Dan (Tiff) Jones, and Susan Jones. Bobby had two grandchildren, Isaac Jones and Morgan Jones whom he loved very much. He is also survived by two brothers, seven nephews, and two nieces: Gerald (Janice) Jones and John (Cecilia) Jones and their children Lance, Layton, Lyndall, Jon, Laban, and Tim, Elba, Gloria, Anthony.
During his grade school years, he attended Jones Public Schools, where he was active in 4H. He raised money for college by raising and selling chickens. In addition to his work around the family farm, he learned house wiring from his father; automotive repair, wood working, and other practical skills from different relatives. Bobby attended Oklahoma Baptist University for a year. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army to avoid the draft and be able to select electronics training. He worked on radar equipment in Hawaii for 18 months. He and Jo married while attending Tulsa University and moved to Oklahoma City, Bobby upgraded radar systems in B-52 bombers at Tinker AFB. He graduated from Central State University. In 1967, he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX while pastoring Bethel Baptist Church in Healdton, OK. Bobby and Jo were appointed as Southern Baptist missionaries that year and moved their family to Indonesia in 1968. They served in Indonesia for 27 years, where Bobby worked as a church planter and building consultant. He maintained missionary vehicles and made numerous repairs and upgrades to missionary homes and churches. He built a 50-bed hospital in Sumatra, Indonesia, and managed upgrades to hospitals in Kediri, Indonesia, and later in Bangalore, India. Bobby and Jo served the last three years of their missionary careers in Bangalore, before they retired in 2000.
After retiring, Bobby and Jo were active members in South Tulsa Baptist Church until his illness prevented their regular attendance. Bobby loved God and people. He served in multiple positions at South Tulsa Baptist church. He also served with Habitat for Humanity and as chaplain for Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief.
The memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, at South Tulsa Baptist Church, 10310 S Sheridan Rd, Tulsa, OK 74133. The service will be broadcast on southtulsa.live beginning at 1:15 p.m.
