Sheryl Diann Phelps' Obituary
Sheryl Phelps Obituary
Sheryl Diann was born in Wichita, Kansas to Deaton and Priscilla (Sellers) Brown. She was raised in the Bristow and Sapulpa area. She graduated from Sapulpa High School in 1971 where she was All State choir. Sherry’s father was transferred to Gainesville, Texas in 1971 and upon her graduation, the family followed. Sherry attended Cooke County Junior College and North Texas State. She played the organ at the First Christian Church in the morning and the piano at Grand Avenue Baptist Church in the evening. It was at Grand Avenue Baptist Church that she met a young man, Steve Phelps. They were engaged later on August 10, 1973 and the two married on May 18, 1974. A few years later, Steve joined the Army. After his completion of Special Forces training, Steve and Sherry made their home in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. They put down roots by purchasing a home and growing their family with the birth of daughter, Rashelle. Upon Steve’s discharge, the family moved to Tulsa for a short period before returning to Gainesville, where they welcomed son, Dustin. This growing family was open to new adventures and relocated to Anchorage, Alaska. Sherry worked as a legal secretary and played the piano for the Church of God, where Steve served as a youth pastor. The couple also welcomed two sons, Drew and Cameron. After serving in various churches in Santa Maria, California, and Edmonds, Washington the Phelps family decided it was time to move back and be closer to family. Steve was offered a position to serve in a church in Oklahoma and the family purchased their home in Bixby. Sherry found employment at the Union 8th Grade Center. Sherry retired in 2012 after being diagnosed with stage four cancer. Sherry was a fighter. She outlived her diagnosis by living twice as long as predicted. She endured too many rounds of chemo to count, and multiple surgeries. Through it all, she kept her faith strong- never wavering in her love for Christ and her family.Sherry was an exceptional cook and baker, owning her very own cupcake business: Sherry’s Cupcake Creations. She and Steve were inseparable during their 46 years of marriage. They rode their Harley together, vacationed to Cancun many times where Sherry would show off her open water diver certification. Although, afraid of heights, Sherry even went skydiving with Steve on his 1000th jump. She loved her family fiercely. Sherry passed away February 24, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family. Those she leaves to cherish her memory are: husband, Steve Phelps; daughter, Rashelle Phelps; sons, Dustin Phelps, Drew Phelps and wife Vanessa, and Cameron Phelps; grandchildren, Nikki, Mikayla, Isis, Angelina, Luna, Giuliana and Vincent Ray; sister, Sheila Bear and husband Ken, many cousins; and her parents, Deaton and Priscilla Brown; along with her loving cancer support group, The Pearls. She was preceded in death by grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousin, Rudy Taylor.
