Dr. Richard "Dick" Edwin Jones
October 30th, 1947 - January 3rd, 2024
76 years old
Richard Edwin Jones was born on October 30th, 1947 to Marjorie and Richard Jones in Omaha, Nebraska. He is survived by his only sibling, Susan Martin. He graduated from high school and Creighton University in Omaha, attended and was graduated from Nebraska Medical School in 1973.
Shortly thereafter he married the love of his life, Margaret "Maggie" Jones, and together they welcomed 2 daughters, Heather and Jennifer. His young family moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma where he spent his almost 30 year career working as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist at the Shawnee Clinic.
He and Maggie did all the wonderful family things. Ski trips, co-ed golf and a memorable Alaskan cruise. They enjoyed friends, pool parties, dinners at new restaurants and raising their family together. He was heartbroken when Maggie pre-deceased him after almost 30 years of marriage.
He filled his new life with travel, including climbing to Mt. Everest base camp and Mt. Kilimanjaro with his best friend also Richard Jones. Together they claimed many peaks in Colorado and visited numerous National Parks. He took up scuba diving and enjoyed many live abroad boat retreats.
Richard was lucky in love a second time when he met and married Bonita on December 26th 2008. With this marriage he gained 2 step-daughters, Elyssa and Tamara, and together they enjoyed the company of their blended family on holidays and vacations for 15 wonderful years.
He and Bonita traveled to Yosemite, Yellowstone, Arches and other National Parks. They adventured through Canada and on to California. They celebrated their 10 year anniversary with a month long trip to New York City. Together they enjoyed playing card games, board games, doing puzzles and learned to play ping pong, which they played often.
Richard was especially proud of training for and successfully completing a full marathon on his 65th birthday. He also ran numerous half marathons and enjoyed exercise his whole life.
Richard attended his 50 year Medical School reunion in 2023 and enjoyed catching up with his medical school friends.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents. Marjorie and Richard Jones, and beloved wife Margaret "Maggie" Jones.
He is survived by his wife, Bonita. Daughters Dr. Heather Jones and Jennifer Gattenby, step daughters Elyssa and her husband Damon Talburt, Tamara and her husband Neil Cornell, and their families. He is also survived by grandchildren Chloe, Brenden and Cydney Norton, Layla Jones, Cameron and Andrew Talburt and Henry and Benjamin Cornell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dr. Jones name to either Creighton University or Nebraska University Stem Program.
