Rebecca Ellen Coffee's Obituary
Rebecca Coffee Obituary
A funeral ceremony honoring Rebecca Ellen “Becky” Coffee will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at the RiverCrest Chapel in Bixby, with interment will follow in the Bixby Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday, also at RiverCrest. Becky passed away Saturday morning, June 27, 2020 at her home in south Broken Arrow while surrounded by friends and family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bixby Funeral Service.
Becky was born September 22, 1947 in Tulsa, the daughter of J.C. and Dorothy (Gibson) Biggers, and was raised on the family farm in Bixby. She loved basketball and would practice at the gym each morning before school since coach Whitey Ford gave her a key. She and her teammates, Hazel Gibson Donelson, Donna Green Gibson, Barbara Hudson Brock, among others, were a dominating force. Becky was honored with an All-State award her senior year, 1965. Becky graduated from Bixby High School with the Class of 1965.
Following high school, Becky attended Oklahoma State for two years where she met Jim Coffee. The couple married June 17, 1967 at the First Baptist Church in Bixby. Jim’s career took them to Houston, temporarily, prior to coming back home to Bixby. Upon her return, Becky completed her degree in Education at Northeastern State in Tahlequah. Following graduation, she accepted a position with Berryhill Schools as a teacher and basketball coach. Becky earned her master’s degree in Education from East Central State in Edmond, while carrying a 4.0 GPA.
Becky’s young family relocated to Colorado Springs in 1978. They lived there until Jim passed away in 1990. For a short while, Becky taught high school at the Air Force Academy, and she often marveled at how well behaved the children were there. Also, while living in Colorado, she pursued a real estate sales career with Merrill Lynch. Becky retired from Union Public Schools where she taught English and coached the girl’s freshman basketball team.
A lover of art, Becky enjoyed watercolors and oil painting. She also loved shopping and traveling the world with her friends and family. Becky was service oriented, generous, and had a huge heart, always there to help others in any way possible.
Surviving family include her two children: James Owen Coffee and wife, Laura of Littleton, CO, and Kara Smith and husband, Matt of Arvada, CO; her grandchildren: Logan and Gavin; and her sister, Annette Hayes and husband, Billy Ralph.
Becky was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers (Alva Lee Biggers and John Biggers), and her granddaughter, Zoie Anne Smith.
