Born February 22,1944 in Cherokee, Oklahoma, Paula was the daughter of Pauline Margaret (Martin) Watson and Audie Watson. She was raised by her mother and grandmother in Western Oklahoma. They moved to Oklahoma City when Paula was a teenager. Throughout high school she worked at Harold’s Shoe Store, a business owned and operated by her Aunt Dell.
While attending Classen High School, Paula was actively involved with the pep squad. Her academic studies took priority over everything. Paula graduated with the Class of 1962. She met Jack Hughey while visiting Holdenville, Oklahoma. Jack took notice of her immediately as Paula and her girlfriend passed by the fire station “cruising the strip.” He waived them over and it was the beginning of 57 wonderful years together. Paula and Jack were married March 5, 1965 in El Reno, Oklahoma.
When Jack decided to attend the University of Oklahoma to pursue higher education, Paula supported him in every way possible. His successful career in the nuclear power industry relocated their family to Michigan, California, Idaho, Oregon, Mississippi, and eventually back to Oklahoma. Paula was a wonderful mother to Bob, Michelle, and Michael - making south Broken Arrow their home for 37 years. Her skills in shorthand and typing were the very best. She held various secretarial and executive administrative positions in the banking, legal, as well as oil and gas industries.
Paula and Jack enjoyed square dancing through the years, especially while living in California. While working at Resolution Trust, Paula met Carolyn Stewart, a colleague who would become her best friend. Paula and Jack made many lasting memories at Bruce and Carolyn’s weekend home on Ft. Gibson Lake. She also enjoyed many years of mother-daughter Bunco with close friends. Paula loved decorating for Christmas. She often started decorating months ahead of time to enjoy the holiday spirit and prepare for cherished time with her family. She loved hosting family and friends for holidays or family gatherings. Throughout their marriage and especially during their retirement years, they enjoyed traveling to see all 50 states and many countries abroad together. They loved to visit their children and grandkids during their many travels. Cruising was among one of their favorite pastimes. They enjoyed it so much they took their entire family of 17 on a cruise in the summer of 2019.
Paula lived life to the fullest. She always had a smile on her face and a warm embrace to give. She bravely fought and beat cancer twice. Paula will be remembered for closeness and love of her family and many friendships that have lasted a lifetime.
