Nolan Scott Bates passed away Thursday, June 22, 2023 in Inola, Oklahoma. He was 59 years old. A private interment will be held in the Little Cemetery in Seminole, Oklahoma. Born August 19, 1963 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Scott was the son of Noale and Eleanor (Hale) Bates. Scott and his family moved to Norman, Oklahoma when he was two years old to be nearer his grandparents. He had a great childhood in Norman, along with his good friend Brent Lynch and the "Ridge Road Gang." Scott and his buddies were always raising havoc, playing baseball, running go carts, and jumping motorcycles. Fast cars and pretty girls became a big part of equation throughout Scott's adolescent years. Scott graduated from Norman High School and served honorably in the United States Marine Corps. His military destinations included Camp Pendleton, Korea, Okinawa, and the Philippines. Following basic training, Scott met a fellow Marine named George, from Hulbert, Oklahoma. Scott and George would remain lifelong friends. Many fond memories were made by Scott working in the glass shop with his father. He was especially proud of the glass they installed on the bridge, connecting the VA Medical Center and the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Scott met Kathleen in 2004 through an introduction by their families. The couple were married on September 16 and spent 20 wonderful years together. Scott was very talented in creating photoshop designs. Kathleen's expertise in technology enabled Scott to take his talents to the next level. A lifelong Nascar fan, Scott designed the wrap for professional Nascar driver, J.J. Yeley's car. Scott's favorite drivers throughout his lifetime were unquestionably Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and eventually Dale Jr. Scott was employed as an automotive mechanic for many years for Larry Spencer Chevrolet in Norman. He was very proud of his work there, which he took very seriously. Scott was also a coach for his son's baseball team and an avid Oklahoma Sooner fan. Surviving family include his wife Kathleen; son, Nolan Scott Bates Jr.; stepchildren, Valerie Weeden and husband, Jon, Joshua Seabolt and wife, Tina, Heather Perry and husband, Grant, Jenny Davis and her husband, Chris; and 14 grandchildren. Scott was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
