Michael Edward Reif, Sr.'s Obituary
Michael Edward Reif, M.D., age 81, passed away on September 19, 2024 in Tulsa, OK. Born on December 3, 1942 in Oklahoma City, son of Edward Winter Reif and Jean (Ferris) Reif, the family eventually moved to Tulsa where Mike attended Edison High School, enjoying playing football for the Eagles. It was during that time he met Gerry McNeal who fell in love with #62. They both attended the University of Tulsa for undergraduate studies. They married on August 1, 1964 at St John's Episcopal Church.
Mike went to Washington University in St Louis for medical school. He did his surgical training at Oklahoma University Medical School. Following his education he served as Chief of Surgery at Tinker Air Force Base for two years. Then he then worked at Mercy Hospital as a general and peripheral vascular surgeon. He retired early, at 61, allowing him more time with his eight grandchildren.
In 2008 he and Gerry took a late in life adventure and moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains for 12 years. It was a wonderful gathering place for their family. They loved hiking and biking there. He was a good and kind man. He was devoted to his family, his profession and his church; He strongly supported The Heritage Foundation in Washington D.C.
A move to Montereau Retirement Community in Tulsa occurred in 2020. While there Mike took up pool. He studied the game extensively and practiced almost every night. He also enjoyed landscape work at St John's. He took pride in planting trees and flowers, laying sod, organizing work days for a great crew of helpers. Additionally he was a member of the Brotherhood of St Andrews at the church.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; as well as his son, Michael E Reif, Jr, in 2015. He is survived by his wife Gerry; daughter Elaine Sweeney and her children Kate and Ryan; his daughter Michelle Hitt and her four children, Lukas, Anna, Alex and Aaron; and his daughter-in-law Sheri Reif and her children Ada and Hudson; also his brother Richard Reif and wife Toni of South Carolina.
