Probably my most precious memory of Aunt Mary was during a recent visit to see her and spruce up their new room at the nursing home with photos for the wall and homey touches. Brian was in and out of their room several times because he loved the new place and all the new friends and staff. Aunt Mary told me she couldn't over how happy Brian was there. I said well that must make you happy too. And she smiled and said God is so good. She knew he was happy and safe now.
We called her Aunt Neenee. She was my Dad's sister and lived on Grandaddy Don and Grandmother Marian's farm. They had chickens and roosters that would crow. The turkeys that would gobble and gobble. She would let us help to get her eggs to enjoy at big breakfasts in their Cafe at their motel on route 66. Always when we were on the highway you could see the farm and Dad would honk the car from there with Dat Dat Dada da Dat Dat to let them know we would be arriving soon. They would all be out in the front yard with Brian when we pulled in waving with big smiles. Aunt Neenee with her beautiful long black hair. Brian would hug so tight. Aunt Neenee, Grandmother Marion and Gramma Crawford would bring us in to a huge meal they had worked on all day to prepare. We loved going swimming at Don's Marine land with the juke box and we would work the consession stand and go swimming off the dock or go on the paddle boat and ofcouse fish and catch frogs in the lakes. I cherish that memory of family.
Mary was married to my Uncle Jimmy my mom's brother.. when me and my brother was little my dad was in Sherman Texas at the VA center he had brain surgery, my mom left us with Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Mary. We loved the farm and the 2 story brick house in sapulpa. Uncle Jimmy would take us to ponds to swim and take us riding on the tractor, we had many family reunions back there. We loved going there. Mary Janeen was my Aunt, my dad’s sister. Often, when we would visit she would spend time with my brother and I. We spent time on the farm and they had Shetland ponies that Donnie and I would ride and help
Groom and feed. Mary Janeen had a great sense of humor and I will never forget one visit in particular. Mary Janeen was cleaning bull frogs for cooking later and had skinned and was getting ready to cut up a large frog. She called me over to see the frog in the sink and sprinkled salt on its tail end and the skinned frog began kicking those back legs like he was going to jump out of the sink. Of course I jumped back and Mary Janeen laughed and laughed. Of course this was a chemical reaction to the salt and the exposed muscle, but I didn’t know that.
