A funeral ceremony honoring the life of Lyndell F. Coley will be held 10 AM Monday, February 10, 2020 at the Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 PM Sunday at Bixby Funeral Service. Lyndell passed away Thursday morning, February 6, 2020 at the Veteran’s Center in Claremore. She was 94.
Born July 6, 1925 in Longworth, Texas, Lyndell was the daughter of Thomas Henry and Frankie Alberta (Arnold) Moore. One of eleven children, she spent a lot of time with her siblings in the cotton fields of Texas. They received their education in a one room schoolhouse. It was always recommended not to blink while driving through Longworth.
At the age of 16, Lyndell began working for the hospital in Roby, the nearby county seat. She worked as a nurse’s aide while assisting the doctors and hospital staff with anything they needed. Lyndell entered the U.S. Navy in 1945 where she honorably served one year in healthcare. While working at the Naval hospital in Norman, OK, she was called out to the scene of an accident where she met Robert Coley, a prisoner of war from World War II. He wrecked his car on the side of the road. Lyndell won their first argument when she insisted that he ride in the back of the ambulance to the hospital. Robert had a lengthy stay, while also receiving rehabilitation for his war time injuries. Lyndell finally agreed to a date with Robert under one condition, that he shave his mustache. That he did and they lived happily ever after.
Following her military discharge in the summer of 1946, Lyndell rode the train to Washington, D.C. where she and Robert were married. Robert was working for the Prison Bureau at the time. While in Washington, Lyndell worked in a department store, and was also employed as an assistant to a dentist for a couple of years. While raising their family, Robert was transferred numerous times to Wichita, Dallas, Tulsa, and Denver. Their family settled in Bixby in 1964 after a final transfer to McDonnell-Douglass in Tulsa.
A master gardener, Lyndell had a green thumb and could grow most anything. Her garden was always full of beautiful flowers and various types of plants. She loved quilting, crocheting and making ceramics with her sisters. While Lyndell’s garden was full of flowers, Robert’s garden was full of vegetables. Lyndell canned an endless supply of vegetables, jellies, pickles, and she even made her own butter.
Lyndell loved spending quality time with her grandchildren. She was also very patriotic and proud of her military service, volunteering countless hours with the POW organizations. Lyndell had two favorite football teams: Texas, and ANYBODY playing OU!
Surviving family members include her two children, Bobbie Lynne Rosenthal and Kenneth Coley; her grandchildren, Sarah Ann Wyssman and Adam B. Coley; and her great grandchildren, Harper Leann Wyssman and Connor Robert Charles Coley.
Lyndell was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, eight sisters and two brothers.
