A Memorial tree was ordered in memory of Kathleen Fortner by Jane Holland. Plant a TreeI met Kathy in summer school at Oklahoma State University, June 1970. I asked her to come to Houston with me and get a teaching job too and she was all in. That was the beginning of our long and lasting friendship. What I will always remember about Kathy was she knew God had a plan for her life to become a Proverbs 21 wife and mother. That was her destiny and she accepted that because she loved and trusted in Jesus. She met Derrel at First Baptist Church in Houston, married and made a beautiful home and family every where she was planted. She was the most organized person Ive ever known and the best house keeper ever too. And she was very proud of all her children and loved them dearly. I love you, Kathy, and thank God you have no more pain and are living in the presence of Jesus. See you soon, JanieJane Holland

My very first memory of Aunt Kathy was when she and Uncle Derrel had moved from Texas to Nichols Hills within OKC. It was before they had any children. Rhonda and I spent a weekend with them and really had a fun time. She took us swimming and to the park but the coolest thing was this. She totally turned us loose in her kitchen. She just gave us some cook books and said pick out anything you want to cook and we will go to the grocery store and get whatever you need. Rhonda and I still remember this, we made beef stroganoff for dinner and cinnamon rolls for dessert. We felt like she treated us as if we were competent and mature persons and that felt really good. She didn’t hover and try to supervise, she let us read the instructions and figure it out on our own. I can’t remember if it tasted good lol, but it had a life long impact on us. It gave us confidence and I have to say cinnamon rolls are still my specialty. Something else I remember about Aunt Kathy and her kitchen…. She had a hanging cage with two tiny little song birds, possibly finches. Uncle Derrel played a trick on her and put a robin’s egg that had blown out onto the lawn in the finch’s basket nest. Aunt Kathy got so excited that her finches were having a baby together. Lol, that blue egg was bigger than her bird. We loved Aunt Kathy and admire her faith and knowledge of God’s Word. There will be a wonderful celebration in Heaven and a welcome home for her.

Kathy and Derrel, just after they were married were in a Sunday school class that my mother and father-in-law were teaching. That started a life long friendship that went deep & they stayed in touch through lifes ups & downs.
When I joined the family, I quickly knew that Kathy was like a daughter to my in-laws. What a beautiful soul she was! Loved visiting with her & we were never at a loss for words. She genuinely cared about our family & took time to come see us or call regularly.
The last conversation we had with her was on her 75th birthday & we talked about Heaven. She said, I dont know why everyone always says who they are looking forward to seeing, I just want to see Jesus!! The rest will come later but Jesus is who I cant wait to see face to face!
She loved her family so much & cherished her time with each one! She was so proud of all of them. This sweet human will be terribly missed.
