John Eddings Obituary
John Mark Eddings, Bixby resident, passed away Wednesday evening, August 10, 2022 at the Colonial Oaks Memory Care in Tulsa. He was 87 years old.
A funeral ceremony honoring John will be held 10 AM Monday, August 15 at the Bixby Freewill Baptist Church. Interment is scheduled for 2 PM in the Choteau Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 PM Sunday at Bixby-South Tulsa Funeral Service, 13307 S. Memorial Drive. Joe Watkins Jr., Joe Watkins Sr., Hunter Eddings, Montana Eddings, Mavrick Eddings, and Darrell Rollins will be serving as pallbearers.
Born December 26, 1934 in Pryor, Oklahoma, John was the son of Josiah Andrew and Belle Elizabeth (Pease) Eddings. John attended Osage Elementary School and graduated from Pryor High School in 1953. A hard worker, John delivered newspapers and worked at Safeway during his early years. He even purchased the first car and television for his parents. John continued his education at Northeastern State and Tulsa Universities, earning his Master’s degree 60hrs in Education.
John met Alice Spangler while attending Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. They enjoyed many great times together cooking hot dogs by the campfire at the Barron Fork Creek. John and Allice were married August 31, 1958 at the Nazarene Church in Alice’s hometown of Henryetta.
John pursued a successful career as an educator, serving as the Principal for Hearst, Bates, Sandburg, and Grissom Elementary Schools. He was employed by Tulsa Public Schools for 28 years.
A man of faith, John was a member of Owasso, Lewis Avenue, Grace, and Bixby Freewill Baptist Churches. He served in several leadership roles through the years including Sunday school classes, children’s services, and even played softball in the church’s league. John was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the National Education Association of Oklahoma, the Elementary Principal’s Association, and the Retired Teacher’s Association. John enjoyed hunting waterfowl and fishing for crappie, sandbass, and striper. Many wonderful memories were made at their lake house on Lake Hudson, sharing his joy of fishing with his children and grandchildren. John worked hard and played even harder! His memory will be eternal in the hearts of all who loved him.
Surviving family members include his wife, Alice Faye Eddings; his children, John Mark Eddings, Jr. & wife Tally, Jennifer Watkins & husband Joe, David Joe Eddings & wife Sarah, and Daniel J. Eddings & wife Autumn; grandchildren, Alyssa Eddings, Megan Eddings, Kristen Eddings, Joe Watkins Jr. & wife Kristina, Jonathan Watkins, Amanda Watkins, Hunter Eddings & wife Mayraya, Hannah Eddings, Montana Eddings, McKenna Eddings, and Mavrick Eddings; one great grandchild, Peyton Biggs; and his sister, Ruth DeShazo & husband George.
John was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Andrew Eddings, Lelea Neill, Annie Belle Fox, Naomi Loudermilk, and Essie Shearer.
