Janet Elaine Vaughn's Obituary
Janet Elaine Vaughn - known to all who loved her as Jan - passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family on Monday evening, May 18, 2026, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was 79 years old.
Jan was born on October 8, 1946, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Harold Luane Miller and Vivian Louise (Ross). She was a graduate of Southeast High School in Kansas City Missouri and furthered her education at Kansas City Business College as a 1968 graduate, equipping her with the skills that would carry her through a long and dedicated professional life. Jan worked as a secretary and office professional for a number of organizations over the years, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Avis Rent A Car, Sanger Harris, and Quail Springs Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, where her warmth and efficiency left a lasting impression on all who worked alongside her.
Jan met the love of her life, James Lee Vaughn, during their high school years, and the two were united in marriage in 1969. Together they built a beautiful life, raising their family in the Oklahoma City, Edmond, and eventually the Claremore and Owasso areas. Home was wherever Jan was - and she made every home a place of warmth, laughter, and the irresistible aroma of something wonderful cooking in the kitchen.
Those who knew Jan would describe her first and foremost as hospitable. Her door was always open, her table was always set, and her heart was always ready to welcome whoever walked through. She had a deep love for gardening and took great pride in nurturing both her flowers and the people around her. Jan was a devoted animal lover who cherished her critters dearly, and she had a special gift for making every grandchild feel as though they were her favorite - because in her heart, they each truly were. She treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren, and her joy in their presence was unmistakable.
Jan knew Jesus as her savior. As a child she would board a Sunday School bus that took her to church where the bus driver led her to Christ. Jan's relationship with Christ and faithful prayers is evident in her legacy of all around her. Jan is survived by her three children: her daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Douglas Leslie; her daughter Julie Lawson; and her son James Nathan Vaughn and daughter-in-law Stephanie. She is also survived by 14 beloved grandchildren, Clayton Hayes and wife Gabrielle, Kyle Hayes, Samuel Hayes, Katherine Lawson-Abel and husband Colton, Luke Lawson, Ethan Lawson, John Lawson, Jordan Petrovich, Braden Petrovich, Dawson Petrovich, Olivia Petrovich, Austin Vaughn, Aaron Vaughn, Adelyn Vaughn and by her sisters Linda Ward and husband Bob Ward of Texarkana and Margo Wolken and husband Gary of Pittsburg, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband James, her parents Harold and Vivian, her sister Melody Miller and her brother John Robards.
Jan's life was a testament to love in its most generous form - given freely, abundantly, and without condition. During her final days she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren who recalled stories of how she blessed their lives just as Proverbs 31:28 says, "Her children rise up, and call her blessed".
She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered. "The memory of the righteous is a blessing". Proverbs 10:7
