James Russell Carter's Obituary
James Russell Carter
November 16, 1945 - November 11 , 2025
James Russell "Jim" Carter was born on November 16, 1945, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to the late James Edgar and Nova Mae Carter. From the very beginning, Russell-as his family lovingly called him-showed a remarkable spirit. Diagnosed with polio at a young age, he was told he would never walk again. Through determination and grit, he not only learned to walk but became an athlete and worked many jobs throughout his childhood, proving early on the strength of his character.
Jim, as he was known to his friends, attended The University of Oklahoma, where he proudly played baseball. After earning his degree, he returned home to Tulsa and began working for Sand Springs Public Schools, leading the Indian Education Program. It was there that he met the love of his life, Mary Wood. Their love grew into a beautiful partnership, and together they welcomed their daughter, Sarah-a joy and blessing to both.
Later, Jim transitioned into a career in sales, where his natural ability to connect with people allowed him to flourish. Even after being diagnosed with early-onset dementia, he remained determined and engaged, continuing to pursue entrepreneurial ideas long after most would have stepped away. His work ethic, curiosity, and resilience never faltered.
Jim had many interests, but two that brought him special delight were collecting and organizing. He loved trying out every new gadget he could find-and he kept them all neatly arranged. His desk was often a maze of extension cords, power strips, folders and binders that held the details of his world.
Above all, Jim cherished the people in his life. He adored Sooner sports, enjoyed golf and adventure, but his deepest devotion was always to family and friendship. If Jim counted you as a friend, you had a loyal companion for life.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ernie Carter; his beloved daughter, Sarah Carter; and his cherished partner, Mary Wood. A devout Christian, Jim carried a quiet but unwavering faith. It brings comfort to know he is now reunited with those he loved so dearly.
Jim's life was a testament to kindness, curiosity, perseverance, and gentle strength. He will be remembered for his humor, humility, and the constant love he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, 5111 South Memorial Drive, Tulsa. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Jim by donating to a charity of your choice.
