Jack Dempsey Johnson's Obituary
Jack Johnson Obituary
Born December 15, 1937 in Allen, Oklahoma, Jack Dempsey Johnson was the only child born to Jack R. and Cordelia M. Johnson. The Johnson family made frequent moves during Jack's youth, but it would be Wewoka where he attended school and met the love of his life, Sharon Lynn Dye. It seemed that once Jack met, and became interested in Sharon, he also became pretty protective - tightening his fists a time or two to defend his 'treasure'. Jack wasn't the only one rooting for this relationship either. When he would ask to borrow his parent's car for the evening, if Sharon wasn't in the plans then Jack wasn't getting the car!Needing a little bit of spending money to court Sharon, Jack and best friend Roger developed a plan. It just so happened that Roger was one of the fastest boys in Seminole county, so the boys figured they could bet fifty cents that Roger would win in a foot race. When he won, the boys had enough prize money that they could then afford to take their girls out on double dates. As the story continued, Sharon was also enamored with Jack and, at the tender age of seventeen, the two decided to begin the rest of their lives together. This occurred on July 23, 1955 in a Durant, Oklahoma wedding ceremony. The two then made their home in the Oklahoma City area as they began a family a year later welcoming children: Stephen, Theresa, Diana and Tamara over the next 11 years. To support his family, Jack worked as a computer engineer for multiple companies. He found employment with Tinker Air Force Base and Sperry Univac before moving to Houston where he worked for the Amdahl Corporation. After spending some time in the Plano, TX area, he moved back to Houston where he had a career with the Compaq Computer Corporation. It was during his first and only interview with the company that Jack was asked, "If there was a problem that you couldn't solve, who would you turn to for help?" Jack replied, "Me. There's never been a problem I couldn't fix." He was hired on the spot and proved himself time and time again as he became known as, "The Go-To Guy" and the last resort for fixing any computer problem. Having multiple patents for computer related advances, Jack loved his job and considered his career one of his greatest accomplishments. The only rival to his career would have been the relationship he had with his best friend and wife, Sharon whom he loved deeply and shared 49 wonderful years with. When not at work, which was seldom, Jack could be found watching boxing, following OU football, researching genealogy. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Jack was loyal to those he knew and trusted. He would often say, "My friends know that I've got their back". This was true for both family and friends that Jack became close to. It will be those who were privileged to have this type of relationship with Jack who will deeply miss him, but who will also be left with the honor to continue his legacy. Jack passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 in Tulsa. He was 80. He is survived by: his son, Stephen Johnson and wife, Kareen of Columbus, GA; two daughters: Diana Giordenella of Tulsa, OK and Tamara DeGayner and husband, Steve of Houston, TX. He is also survived by: numerous grandchildren, including Nikolaos Trenoff of Tulsa; multiple great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
