Helmut Kurt Engelke's Obituary
Helmut "Opa" Engelke passed away peacefully on April 14,2026 at 9:30 p.m., leaving behind a life defined by strength, sacrifice and unwavering love for his family.
Born on November 4, 1934, in Oschke, in the Tilsit district of Germany, Helmut was the son of Kurt and Olga Engelke. He was raised in a home where hard work was expected and resilience was learned early-values that would shape the man he became.
Helmut attended the Police Academy in Niederpleis, graduating at the top of his class. He dedicated nearly four decades to law enforcement in Bonn, Germany, rising to the rank of Polizei-Hauptkommissar (Senior Police Captain). In his later years of service, he became Press Secretary for the Bonn Police Department, where he was entrusted with working alongside and protecting foreign dignitaries and ambassadors. Among those moments, he proudly contributed to the coordination surrounding President Ronald Reagan's visit in 1982.
Beyond his accomplishments, Helmut's greatest pride was his family.
He was a devoted husband to Sandra Engelke and a loving father to Tricia and Markus. In a defining moment of courage and vision, Helmut chose to bring his family to the United States for what was meant to be a short visit-but became a new life. He saw opportunity, took a leap of faith, and built the home where he would live out the rest of his years, creating a place filled with memories, laughter, and lasting traditions.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Engelke; his daughter, Tricia Engelke; his son, Markus Engelke, and his daughter-in-law, Melissa Engelke; his grandchildren, Mason, Mackenzie, Mitchell, Michael, Matthew, and Mark; his siblings, Werner and Inge; four daughters-in-law; and nine great-grandchildren, each a continuation of the life and legacy he built.
His siblings: Manfred, Hubert, and Helga preceded him in death.
Opa will be deeply missed, especially during the Christmas season-a time he made magical, meaningful, and unforgettable for everyone around him. His presence filled the room in a way that cannot be replaced. He was a steady presence, a quiet strength, and a man whose love didn't need many words but was always deeply felt. Though he is no longer with us, the values he lived by, the life he built, and the family he loved will continue on.
He will be missed more than words can express and remembered always.
In Treue gedient. In Frieden geruht.
(Served in loyalty. Resting in peace.)
