Gladys Christine Steen's Obituary
Gladys Christine Steen, beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, at her Tulsa, Oklahoma residence. She was 83 years old. Born on June 8, 1942, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Gladys was the beloved daughter of Howard and Leona Belcher.
Though Gladys did not belong to any particular church, her faith was not found within walls - it was found in her actions. Her Christian beliefs were lived out in the fullest sense: if you were in need of food, clothing, or shelter, and she had it, then so did you. Her home was a place of refuge and warmth, a residence of choice for nieces and nephews who needed a safe harbor. She also opened her heart and home as a foster parent, and to this day, the children she cared for wish they could have stayed. Her love for others was simply without limit. Love was her religion.
Gladys blossomed wherever life planted her. Her journey began in Alabama, and from there she carried her warmth and spirit to Chicago, Illinois, then to Fort Wayne, Indiana, before moving on to Ohio and California. In her later years she returned to the place where it all began - her beloved Alabama - where she retired and was surrounded by those who cherished her most. Her travels even took her to the Oprah Winfrey Show, where she was honored for being a great mother.
Gladys had a sharp and lively mind, and few things delighted her more than a good word puzzle. Crosswords and Sudoku were among her favorites, and she pursued them with the same quiet determination she brought to everything in life. She was also a gifted and devoted crafter - crocheting and knitting pillows, personal blankets, and bed covers that she lovingly gave as gifts. Each piece carried with it her heart, her time, and the immense pride she took in creating something beautiful for someone she loved.
Gladys was a counselor, advisor, and life coach - always ready with strong opinions and connections, whether you wanted them or not.
Gladys is survived by her three devoted children: Elgin Datcher Jr.; Cynthia Datcher-Morris and her husband Vince; and Michael Datcher, PhD. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Ashton, Torrin, Samuel, Ryan, Eyerusalem, and Harlem, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a wide and wonderful circle of friends whose lives were made richer for having known her.
A memorial ceremony honoring Gladys will be held 2 PM Saturday, February 28, 2026 in the Rivercrest Chapel.
