George Shrier Obituary
Mass of Christian Burial honoring George Franklin Shrier, Jr. will be held 1:00 PM Friday, July 17, 2021 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Broken Arrow. George will be laid to rest at the Hammett Family Cemetery in West Virginia. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 PM Thursday at Bixby-South Tulsa Funeral Service & Crematory. George passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. He was 82 years old.
Born October 16, 1938 in Nowata, George was the son of George Franklin Sr. and Annie Catherine (Hammett) Shrier. He grew up in Tulsa and attended St. Francis Elementary and Marquette High School. George moved to West Virginia to live with his aunt during his teenage years. He graduated from St. Mary’s West Virginia High School with the Class of 1957. George played football during that time and enjoyed horseback riding with his many cousins. He referred to those years on the family farm in West Virginia as the best of his life!
Following high school, George enlisted with the U.S. Air Force. He began his military career as a jet mechanic working on F-100’s which involved a tour in Vietnam from April 1969 – March 1970. After 13 years, George transitioned his military career path to become a photo reconnaissance technician. This involved developing film taken by reconnaissance planes. George retired from the military while stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in 1980 where he was a member of the “Third Mob” or Third Combat Communications Group.
George also worked for Mid Continent Oil Company in their film department, operated a residential construction and remodeling business, and eventually pursued a second career as a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office from 1985 – 2011. He worked hard until his official retirement at the age of 70.
Retirement was never a time of rest for George Shrier. He always kept busy with a new project on the farm in Inola. George enjoyed shooting guns, cutting wood, and keeping his beautiful acreage tidy. He was never one to sit around…..except for when football season came around and it was time to watch the Sooners!
Surviving family members include his four sons: Tim Shrier (Donna), Robert Shrier (Jamie), Patrick Shrier (Petra), and Chris Shrier (Romy); 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and his 2 sisters, Mary Adams and Catherine Jones. He is also survived by his wife, Ann. George was preceded in death by his parents, and the mother of his children, Brenda Shrier.
