Darrel Walter Dammann's Obituary
Darrel Walter Dammann, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
Born August 22, 1939 in Red Wing, Minnesota, Darrel was the son of Peter Arthur and Helen Anna (Voth) Dammann. Raised on a farm, Darrel spent his childhood in a close-knit German community where he developed a passion for riding and trick riding horses in the style of Roy Rogers. He grew up alongside his brothers, Donald and David, in a household that embraced a self-sufficient lifestyle, growing their own food and raising livestock.
Darrel graduated from Martin Luther High School in 1957, where he was an avid basketball player. At age 17, Darrel began working at Red Wing Shoe Factory. At 19, he enlisted in the Air Force and served 4 years in the Military (1 year in Vietnam). Once he was discharged, he went back to working for the Red Wing Shoe Factory.
He later met the love of his life, Phyllis Roschen, when she was working at the beauty shop in Red Wing, Minnesota. Their love story began with a memorable first date in Darrel's red Ford convertible, leading to their marriage on August 6, 1966, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Red Wing, Minnesota
In 1973, Darrel's career in sales brought the family to Tulsa. He had started his professional journey at the Red Wing Shoe Company plant in Minnesota at the age of 17 and quickly rose through the ranks. His remarkable achievements included being named Salesman of the Year in 1980 and 1981, with his territory experiencing unprecedented growth during his tenure. After 24 successful years in sales (40+ years with the Red Wing Shoe Company), Darrel retired at the age of 59 to fully embrace his role as a devoted grandfather.
Darrel's family was always his top priority. As a father, he delighted in making breakfast for his children every morning and was a steadfast presence at all their activities. Known for his kind heart and generous spirit, he never said no to anyone in need. His home, known affectionately as "Mr. and Mrs. D's house," was a haven for neighborhood children and friends.
An active member of Asbury Church, Darrel cherished his time with his small Bible study group. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing with his grandchildren, and engaging in card games with his family and friends. Darrel and Phyllis loved to play bridge. Together they were a competitive and inseparable team throughout the years.
Darrel is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; his three children, Tamara and her husband Rodney, Sheila and her husband Michael, and Darin and his wife Kimberly; and his cherished grandchildren, Lindsey, Caleb, Ryan, Lauren, Tyler, and Hailey. He is also survived by his brothers, Donald and David. Darrel was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine, and his parents.
Darrel will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his infectious laughter, and his warm, welcoming spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and countless treasured memories.
The family would like to extend the utmost gratitude to the "Angels" at Suncrest Hospice for their expert care of Darrel and his family.
