A funeral ceremony honoring Barbara Jean Hulen will be held 10 AM Tuesday, October 25, 2022 in the Rivercrest Chapel, 13329 S. Memorial in Bixby. Barbara will lie in state from 9 AM-5PM Monday at the funeral home. She passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2022 in Checotah. She was 88 years old.
Born November 17, 1933 in Eufaula, Barbara was the daughter of Franklin and Wilma Blair Mitchell. She started school in Eufala, and later graduated from Checotah High School with the Class of 1951. Barbara played saxophone in the band. She was also a reporter for the Student Council.
Barbara pursued a career as an educator. She graduated from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah where she also attended graduate school. Barbara earned her Master’s degree in education from the University of Tulsa. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Iota Sorority for over 60 years. Barbara married Bill Hulen July 1, 1955.
Following her time in college, Barbara began her career as a teacher for Liberty School. She would eventually gain employment with Bixby Public Schools, prior to her career in real estate development alongside her husband, Bill. The couple developed the Hulen Meadows subdivision near Hectorville on the family’s 80 acres. Barbara and Bill also owned hardware stores in Bixby, Okmulgee, and Hectorville. Barbara always loved birds of all kinds and was quite the painter. She was a member of Tulsa Town Tours, a society of decorative painters. Barbara also served as President of the Garden Club while living near Hectorville.
After Bill passed way, Barbara reconciled with an old friend, Chuck Woods. They enjoyed traveling together, going to church, birdwatching, and watching sports on television, especially the Sooners! In recent years, Barbara’s declining health brough her back to Checotah to be nearer her brother, Doyle, who looked after her until her passing.
A remarkable woman in so many respects, Barbara’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her……….
Surviving family include her brother, Doyle Mitchell; nieces and nephews, Susan Mitchell; Steve and his children, Brittany and Taylor; and Mike (Lisa) Mitchell, and their children, Shannon (David), Jason, Megan, Lacy and Nick; and a host of extended family and friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; and her special friend, Chuck Woods.
