Gwen C Bieber

Gwen C. Bieber, born Gwen Brown, passed away on May 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, humor, and devotion to family. Born on October 2, 1934, in Mt. Ayr, Indiana, Gwen was the youngest of seven children born to William Orville and Ethel Mae (Large) Brown. At the age of ten, she moved with her family to Chicago, where her parents operated Red's Poultry Market. Gwen even played a role in the family business, managing her own delivery route with a wagon and a sense of responsibility well beyond her years. She graduated from Lindblom High School in Chicago in 1952, where she was popular and involved in various school activities, including the Girls' Athletic Association. Gwen enjoyed fencing, bowling, and cultivating friendships that reflected her vibrant personality. In February of 1954, she married William J. Patton. Together, they welcomed four children-Bruce, Marcia, Linda, and Laura-in Burbank, Illinois. Though their marriage ended, Gwen and William remained devoted co-parents, always keeping their children as their top priority. Gwen worked as an accountant in the steel industry, supporting her family with strength and dedication. Her children's friends fondly remember her as "the cool mom," always present, supportive, and full of spunk. In time, Gwen met and married Arnold Bieber, and their union brought renewed joy and stability. She embraced the opportunity to focus more fully on her home and family. In 1977, the couple moved their blended family to Tulsa, Oklahoma-a move that, for her children, was forever associated with the day Elvis Presley died. Later, Gwen and Arnold relocated to Pennsylvania, where they embraced the "empty nester" chapter of life. This move gave Gwen the time and space to pursue hobbies she loved, including crafting, needlepoint, crocheting, sewing, and quilting. She was an avid shopper and frequent visitor to local community theaters. In Pennsylvania, she loved playing hostess to visiting family and was a fantastic tour guide of the area's rich history. Retirement eventually brought Gwen and Arnold back to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where they became active members of the German American Society of Tulsa. They also enjoyed traveling together, particularly their memorable trips to Europe and Germany. After Arnold's passing, Gwen moved to Bellarose in Broken Arrow. There, she found community once again-playing cards, winning at BINGO, and watching her favorite reruns of Gunsmoke. Gwen was known for her wit, fierce honesty, and a unique brand of sarcasm that came wrapped in love. She never sugarcoated the truth, but those who knew her always knew where they stood-and knew they were loved. Gwen will be deeply missed by her children: Bruce Patton; Marcia Waugaman; Linda Miller and husband Gary; and Laura Steeley and husband Don; stepdaughter Angela (Bieber) Bunyard and husband Ron; grandchildren: Melissa Miller and husband Jack Meischen; Michael Waugaman; Sara Halferty and husband Evan; Ryan Miller; Derek Steeley and wife Alexis; and Lauren Waugaman; and great-grandchildren: Jordan Patton, Bobby Halferty, Sophie Halferty, Cooper Steeley, and Baker Steeley. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; all six of her siblings; her husband, Arnold Bieber; grandsons Justin Patton and Paul Enoch Steeley; and great-grandson Rowen Eugene Halferty. Gwen lived her life with authenticity, strength, and deep love for her family. Her memory will be cherished always.
