Thelma Hoggatt Obituary

Thelma Juanita Hoggatt passed away Thursday afternoon, March 26, 2020 at her home in Bixby. She was 100 years old. A private interment will be held in the Bixby Cemetery.

Born February 15, 1920 in Bixby, Thelma was the daughter of Thomas Henry and Lucy Luella (Monroe) Williams. She was raised mostly by her Aunt Ethel in Bixby where she walked to school every day. Thelma played the clarinet and drums in the Bixby Band. She was also quite an accomplished pianist. Her height of 4’11’’ did not stop her from playing on the basketball team either.

Thelma loved to dance. In her early years, she could be found at the Cain’s Ballroom dancing to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Feisty and mischievous are two good words to describe her during her that era. However, she always had a soft and gentle demeanor, avoiding confrontation with others no matter what. Thelma was always determined to care for her family.

Thelma loved to shop garage sales and resale her findings for a profit. This hobby led to her entering the consignment business. She established the White Elephant Shop on 15th Street in Tulsa which grew into a successful enterprise. Thelma also worked as a riveter for McDonnel Douglass for many years.

Surviving family members include her four children: Thomas Wayne Huff, Robert Lee Huff, Margaret A. Giles, and Joyce Marie Fairlie; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thelma was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Cooper; her parents, and three husbands: Jimmy Leon Cooper, Leon Huff, and Wilbur Fielding Hoggatt.
