Sylvia Lynne Batson

A funeral service honoring Sylvia Lynne Batson will be held 1 PM Friday, January 13, 2023 at the Okmulgee First Freewill Baptist Church, 598 S. Oklahoma Avenue in Okmulgee.  Interment will follow in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.

Sylvia passed away early Monday morning, January 9, 2022 at her home in Glenpool in the presence of loved ones.  She was 63 years old. 

Born September 12, 1959 in Tulsa, Sylvia was the daughter of Robert and Dora Bernice (Leonard) Malone.  Sylvia was raised in Tulsa, as well as a couple of ranches in Broken Arrow and Wagoner.  At the age of 16, Sylvia moved to Glenpool where she graduated high school in 1978. 

Sylvia met James Batson while attending a square-dancing convention in Tulsa.  The couple married September 1, 2006 at the Bixby Freewill Baptist Church.

Sylvia worked at multiple custodial positions through the years, most recently St. John Medical Center.  She was also employed in the public school system, the hotel industry, and sold clothing for a few retail establishments. 

Onery, opinionated, independent, and loving are words that would best describe Sylvia.  She loved fishing, being outdoors, and traveling along with the family’s camper.  Sylvia always had a knack to finding the perfect fishing hole.  She was known to “out-fish” her husband, James every time.  While traveling, Sylvia also enjoyed making stops at the antique stores along the way. She loved spending time with her grandchild. Mexican food was absolutely her favorite cuisine.   

Sylvia was a member of the Okmulgee Freewill Baptist Church.  May her memory be eternal in the hearts of all who loved her.

Surviving family include her husband, James Batson of Glenpool; her children, Jeremy Mitchell and his wife, Yvette of Sapulpa, and Stephanie Mitchell of Glenpool; her grandson, Drake Mitchell; her mother, Dora Bernice Malone of Sapulpa; her brothers, Bruce Malone and wife, Terrie of Kellyville; and Brian Malone and wife, Jeana of Bixby; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her father, Robert “Bob” Malone; as well as her grandparents, Tom and Lucidia Malone of Nebraska, and John and Mildred Leonard of Tulsa.
