Steven Kent Aten passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, August 8, 2023 at his home in Mounds, Oklahoma in the presence of his loving family. He was 78 years old.
Born September 4, 1944 in Jasper County, Illinois, Steven was the son of Webster and Opal (Strader) Aten. He grew up in the Hidalgo area, graduating from Newton Community High School. Following high school, Steven worked a few jobs prior to enlisting in the United States Navy. He served his country honorably during the Vietnam Conflict.
During his marriage to his first wife he adopted and practiced many of the Native American traditions of the Yuchi/Creek tribe. He was highly respected by the families and helped pass down much of what he learned to his grandchildren. He was even given the nick name "Steve Bear".
Steven was and incredibility hard worker, that could build most anything. He loved working in his yard and was quite a skilled carpenter. Steven was known to be quite funny, always laughing and joking, he was a great friend and was always there to help. He was employed by TruGreen LandCare as a supervisor/mechanic for over 25 years and with WSI for about 13 years.
Preceded in death by his first wife Selena Jean "Bear" Aten and stepson Gordon Harper.
Surviving family include his wife, Lucy Aten; his stepson Philip Harper of Tulsa and stepdaughter Linda Gentry of Kansas city; 30 grand and great grandchildren, including great granddaughters, Ashle Romine and Brittany Roothame; and his Sisters, Karen and Diane of Illinois.
