Retha Johnson Holmes, 85 of Tulsa, passed away on Wednesday, December 22 at 12:57 PM after a brief (non-covid related) illness. Retha was born May 19, 1936 in Denver, CO to Ruth P. and Raymond P. Johnson.
Retha is survived by her children, Robert W. (Cheri) Holmes, Lowell, MI, W. Randall (Lori) Holmes, Tulsa, OK, Dr. Todd E. (Katie) Holmes, Johnson City, TN and Tammy L. (Jay) Hoskins, Tulsa, OK; her brother, Bob Hildreth, Denver, CO; 12 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren (with 2 on the way.)
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Wesley S. Holmes. They celebrated 61 years of marriage until his passing in 2017.
Retha and Wesley married on June 1, 1956 and they started their life as pastors, serving Churches in Missouri, Indiana, Florida, and Oklahoma. They had pastored together for nearly 60 years.
Retha’s greatest joy was that all four of her children followed the plan of God for their lives, as their parents had, and now all serve in full-time ministry. She had served alongside her husband as the church organist, a Sunday School teacher, a Youth leader, and then ultimately led the Heirs of Promise women's ministry in Tulsa.
Retha was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who counseled, offered prayer, and a listening ear to anyone who was in need. She led countless souls to Jesus. We know that Great is her Reward in Heaven. She has fought the good fight, finished her race and kept the faith. She is dearly missed.
Bixby-South Tulsa Funeral Home, Bixby, OK is in charge of the arrangements. A celebration of Retha’s life will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, January 13, 2022 at the RiverCrest Chapel in Bixby. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM until the ceremony.
