Norma Jean (Smith) Goins, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023. She had recently relocated to a wonderful independent living center in Louisville, Ky., to live near her daughter, Karen Aroh.
Norma was born in Tulsa, Okla., in 1932. Her parents were Harry Smith and Blanche Turnbo. She grew up with her only brother, Fred Smith, during the Great Depression and World War II. She graduated from Central High School and also attended Nogales Avenue Baptist Church. She grew up loving to read books and caring for her pet horse.
As a young woman, Norma began dating William (Bill) Goins while attending the University of Tulsa (TU). They were married for 44 years until his death in 1996. After graduating from TU and serving in the Army, Bill worked for Citgo Petroleum. His job took Norma and Bill to more than ten different cities across the United States. Norma and Bill had four children.
Norma was a fantastic mom and homemaker while Bill traveled for work up to four nights a week. She and Bill were also very involved in leadership at their churches.
As her children grew up, she took up hobbies such as tennis and bridge. She also worked occasionally for a bank and was a piano teacher. Planning for yearly family vacations was very important to her. These wonderful vacations bonded her family together.
In 1993, Bill was diagnosed with cancer and soon afterwards, Norma and Bill retired in Hot Springs Village, Ark. This had been a dream that they had planned for years. After eight months of living on the lake, Bill passed away.
Norma continued on with her life in Hot Springs Village. She became involved in her church, Balboa Baptist, and volunteered for several organizations. She continued to play tennis and bridge but her greatest enjoyment was having her family come visit her at her lake oasis. Yearly family reunions in Hot Springs were instrumental in keeping her family connected since each of her children lived in different states.
Norma was strong, beautiful and talented. This is something she would never admit because she could never tell a lie and she didn't feel that way even though others did! Her family and friends loved her deeply. She and Bill were strong Christians and wanted their children to be followers in Jesus more than anything else.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Goins; brother, Fred Smith; grandson, Austen Goins.
She is survived by her children: Steve Goins (Catherine) of Bend, Ore., Bryan Goins (Nettie) of Salt Lake City, Utah, Karen Aroh (David) of Louisville, Ky., Dyan Mumma (Randy) of Tulsa, Okla.; grandchildren: Mathew Goins (Jessica), Rachel Raddue (Rick), Andrew Goins (Michelle), Ben Aroh (Christen), Kelly Leibfried (Rick), Joseph Aroh, Daniel Aroh (Sarah), Ian Mumma, Evan Mumma, and Blake Mumma; great-grandchildren: Nathan, Derek, Eli, Carter, Liam, and Hendricks.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, in Tulsa, Okla.
Norma's daughter is the director of a nonprofit in Louisville, Kentucky called Maya Collection, where contributions can be made www.mayacollection.org.
