Melvin McKee Obituary

Private family services will celebrate the life of Melvin LeRoy "Mel" McKee. For those desiring to honor Mel through a memorial donation, the family suggests those gifts be directed to an organization that Mel supported: Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, 1304 N. Kenosha Ave., Tulsa, OK 74106.

Mel was born March 15, 1925 in Enid, Oklahoma to Wallace and Temple McKee the first of three children (brother Clarence, and sister Norma Jean). Raised during the great depression he learned the value of hard work. There were cows to feed and milk, chickens to feed, cream to separate, hogs to slop, and horse stalls to muck. He spent hours on hours of seat time on tractor and farm truck.

In the meantime Mel attended High School in Hayward. There he became determined to go to college. He started college at Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater. After his freshman year Mel received his draft notice to report for active military duty on December 12, 1942. WWII was on. He served his country at the battle of Rimling coming home with honorable discharge, a Purple heart, and Bronze Star. After the war he re-enrolled at Oklahoma A&M and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering specializing in Petroleum studies.

On December 28, 1947 Mel married his best friend, Jean Clodfelter. Soon after he joined Phillips 66 spending an extensive career across the United States. Mel and Jean retired to Grand Lake where they loved to host family reunions and holiday gatherings.

Mel and Jean grew the family with the birth of son Mike and daughter Jane. Mel was a family man spending time with them traveling, fishing and camping. He loved his entire family; children, grand children, and great great ones alike, demonstrating this with his time and generosity.

Melvin was a Christian passing from this life to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 22, 2020. He was 95.

Mel is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Jean McKee; son Mike McKee and wife, Vici; daughter Jane Laney and husband Ed; grand children Jennifer Robertson, James and Jesse McKee, and Sam Laney; brother Clarence McKee and wife, Grace.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Norma Jean LeGrant.
