A funeral ceremony honoring and remembering Maurice Wayne Burns will be held 10 AM Friday, April 9 2021 at the Riverview Baptist Church in Bixby. Interment will follow in Bixby Cemetery. Maurice passed away early Monday morning, April 5, 2021 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. He was 69 years old.
Born June 14, 1951 in Oklahoma City, Maurice was the son of Maurice and Betty (Martin) Burns. His grandparents were peanut farmers near Hanna where Maurice spent most of his childhood. He moved to Eufaula during his sophomore year of high school where he met Cathie Smith. It was love at first sight! Maurice and Cathie married in October of 1969 following their high school graduation and relocated to Tulsa.
Maurice sought employment with a metal company and started night school at Tulsa Junior College while supporting his young family. He eventually earned his bachelor’s degree in Human Resources from Southern Nazarene University. Maurice pursued a long and successful career in IT management with the Williams Companies. He retired in 2005 as his health began to decline.
Church involvement was always a top priority to Maurice throughout his lifetime. Maurice and Cathie initially joined West Tulsa Freewill Baptist Church where he became involved in the bus ministry. While living in Eufaula, they attended Northfork Baptist Church where they supported the community Friendship Kitchen. The family eventually made Riverview Baptist their church home upon their return to the Bixby/Jenks area. While at Riverview, Maurice served as a deacon, taught various ages of Sunday school classes, and supported the youth group extensively while raising their children. Most recently, Maurice helped establish the Friendship Kitchen in Bixby at Riverview Baptist Church.
If there was a job to be done around the house, Maurice knew how to take care of it. He loved the outdoors, fishing for Crappie, and running his bird dogs on quail hunts. Maurice was extremely artistic, devoting a great amount of time to woodworking during his retirement years. He loved antiquing, especially when he found old tools and fishing equipment. Maurice also enjoyed genealogy and telling stories about the information he discovered. A wonderful family man and friend to many, Maurice will be remembered as one of the kindest, most gentle, giving, and loving people you could ever know.
