A funeral ceremony honoring the life of Mary Alice Ramirez will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 13, 2020, at RiverCrest Chapel in Bixby. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 PM Wednesday at Bixby Funeral Service. Alice passed away Saturday, February 8, 2020, at the age of 93.
Born December 22, 1926, in Foil Missouri, Alice was the daughter of Thomas and Addeline (Johnson) Humbyrd. Alice was a preacher’s daughter and quite the tomboy while growing up in the hills of southeast Missouri. She spent a lot of time caring for her grandmother who taught her a variety of domestic skills. Alice met Rudy Ramirez in the Spring of 1963 while doing what they both loved, dancing. The couple would soon marry June 29th of that year in Sand Springs.
Alice followed her brother to Tulsa in 1943 where he found gainful employment. While living with him and his family, she started working Walgreen’s and Kress’ drugstores downtown. Eventually, Alice would pursue a 23-year career with Kerr Glass, retiring in 1989 as a quality checker.
A fabulous baker, Alice received countless requests for her wonderful chocolate and lemon meringue pies. Oh, and she will always be remembered for her apple pie with sugar on top! The crust was always homemade and delicious. Alice was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She always taught her children to keep the kitchen spotless but after she finished cooking, she never failed to use every pot and pan in the kitchen!
Alice loved flowers, filling her flowerbeds with geraniums, roses, hibiscus, and honeysuckle. She was also known to can pickles and squash from her gardens. Christmas was always a special time of the year for Alice. She loved to buy presents for everyone however, she never wrapped the gifts until Christmas Eve! Even though it was a family tradition to draw names, Alice always purchased a gift individually for everyone. Her generosity will not soon be forgotten.
Surviving family members include her children, Judy Eaton and her husband Henry, Christopher Ramirez, Sherry Bardwell and her husband David, J.R. Rudy Ramirez and his wife, Janet, John Slagle, Brenda Brady, and Lisa Woods and her husband, Tony; her brother, Virgil Ray Humbyrd; 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren, and a great-great-great-grandson.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Kathy Coon, and her siblings, Earl Humbyrd, Lela Bevard, George Humbyrd, Basil Humbyrd, and Cecil Humbyrd.
