Obituary

A graveside ceremony to honor and celebrate the life of Mark Wayne Clay is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2022, at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery, Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army funeral honors team. Mark passed from this life on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. He was 66 years old.

On August 20, 1956, Mark Wayne Clay was the second of a set of twin boys, with the other being Michael, born to Charles Monroe and Elizabeth Ann (Roy) Clay. Mark would spend some of his formative years in Tulsa, but also moved to various other places due his father’s career in the United States Air Force. Mark would attend high school at Center High School in Kansas City, Missouri and would then further his education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Enid, Oklahoma. Following his time in college, Mark enlisted in the United States Army, where he attended Command & General Staff College and Navy War College. He spent over 26 years serving his country with much time spent in North Carolina, as well as overseas with assignments in Panama, Germany, Italy, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries. Mark retired in 2006 having attained the rank of Colonel.

Mark married Nurian Caballero on June 18, 1996. Mark was certainly loving and took great care of his family which would grow to include his children: Katheryn, Michael, Juan Sebastian, and Maria Teresa, as well as his grandchildren Madison and Daniel Blackmore.

Mark’s passions were his family and his dachshunds (wiener dogs), traveling, enjoying a good chow at a nice restaurant with a bottle of red cabernet wine, cooking, shooting guns, farming, making jokes, and talking to people. He was often found either watching the food network and working on his next great recipe or talking to strangers at Tractor Supply or a home improvement store. He was truly a man who cared about people around him.

Mark was a hard-working, detail-oriented, strong-willed, and very determined man - as nothing could stop him from accomplishing his goals. Mark passed from this life on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at the age of 66 in his home in Barnsdall, Oklahoma.

Mark leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy the following surviving family: his wife, Nurian Clay; his children: Katheryn Clay, Michael Clay, Juan Sebastian Clay and Maria Teresa Clay; his grandchildren: Madison and Daniel Blackmore; his twin: Michael; and his brothers: Newt and Dwight.

“In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may also be.” – John 14:2-3
