Margaret Gibson Obituary

Services honoring the life of Margaret Mae Gibson will be held 10 AM Thursday, January 28, 2021 in the Rivercrest Chapel at Bixby Funeral Service. The family will receive visitors from 5-7 PM Wednesday, also at Rivercrest.

Margaret Mae “Wilson” Gibson was born on May 31, 1940, in Bixby, Oklahoma to Erbie and Dollie “Wolf” Wilson and passed from this life Friday, January 22, 2021, at St. Francis hospital at the age of 80. Margaret was raised in Leonard, Oklahoma. She loved playing with her dolls, helping her granddad on the farm and she loved a good pick-up game of “boy’s rules” basketball. When she was 7 years old, she became a big sister to Marilyn Sue. Together, they grew up in a little house by Snake Creek. She went to Leonard schools until the 8th grade and went on to attend Bixby High School. It was at Bixby that Margaret met her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Mark Gibson. She was a defensive All-State basketball player on the 1957 state championship high school basketball team. In the fall of 1957, Mark and Margaret were announced the football homecoming king and queen.

Mark and Margaret were married on November 26, 1958, at Leonard Methodist Church. They went on to have two children, Larry Gibson and DeAnn “Gibson” Mashburn. Margaret supported her family through various careers. She worked at First National Bank as a teller, the local newspaper office and the Wagoner County Election Board. Margaret was a wonderful supportive wife who did everything from writing Mark’s college papers to never missing a Friday night football game. Margaret was known to load up a group of kids for Larry’s baseball games and hosting many of DeAnn’s sleepovers. She never would let any of the kids go hungry.

Mark and Margaret loved to travel to Colorado. They enjoyed playing games of pitch and traveling to Branson with life- long friends, Tom and Julie Bolding. Margaret was a member of Coweta First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, helped with communion, oversaw the acolytes and prepared meals for the Lion’s Club.

Margaret’s biggest pride and joys were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always had a good song to sing; from “You Are My Sunshine” to “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”. She loved to cook for them and play many different games like cards and wahoo. She always welcomed everyone and never met a stranger.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Mark Gibson, of Coweta. Her son, Larry Gibson and wife, Laura of Coweta and her daughter, DeAnn Mashburn and husband, Michael of Tahlequah; grandchildren, Heather McDowell of Bixby, April Steele and husband, Brandon of Bixby, Kyle Gibson and wife, Courtney of Coweta, Colton Mashburn and girlfriend, Summer of Tahlequah, and Makenzie and Cade Mashburn of Tahlequah; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Ethan, Emma, Tripp, Jaxon, Greyson, Jacob, Haylee, Harley, Max, and Carter; sister, Marilyn Gray of Wagoner and a host of nieces and nephews.
