A funeral ceremony celebrating the life of Elder Leroy Scott, Jr. will be held 10 AM Thursday, March 30, 2023 at the St. James United Methodist Church, 5050 E. 111th Street in Tulsa. Interment will follow at 2:30 PM with military honors in the Ft. Gibson National Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 PM Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Bixby-South Tulsa Funeral Service. Leroy passed away Sunday morning, March 19, 2023 at his home in Broken Arrow. He was 88 years old.
Born on January 1,1935 in Philadelphia, PA, Leroy was the oldest son of the late Leroy and Willie Mae Scott. He was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. Leroy attended Dobbins High School, Trenton University, Northwestern Bible College and the Lebitan Business College of Philadelphia.
At an early age, Leroy joined the Berean Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia.
Rev. Scott met and married Margaret Perry in 1959 and to this union 4 children were born, Mona, Leroy III, Rodney and Michele.
Rev. Scott served 12 years in the United States Air Force. He is a Vietnam Veteran. He was honorably discharged July 13, 1971. While stationed in Minot, North Dakota, he and three other Ministers organized the first black Church in that City.
Leroy joined the Bryant Baptist Church and was baptized under the Pastorate of the Late Samuel Walker in 1953. Rev. Scott sang in the Junior Choir, served as the Church Clerk, as well as the Superintendent of the Sunday School. He would become an ordained Deacon on April 27, 1956. Leroy served as a Deacon for nine years and God called him to preach the Gospel. On February 23, 1965, he was licensed to preach. He became an ordained Minister under the divine guidance of the Late Rev. James Muldrow on August 31, 1969. In June 1996, Rev. Leroy Scott, Jr. was called to Pastor the Bryant Baptist Church from 1996 until January 2008. In January 2008, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Pastor Leroy Scott, Jr. tendered his resignation as Pastor and he named his successor, Rev. D. Omar Epps and cast his mantle upon Rev. Epps to be the Pastor of the Bryant Baptist Church.
On January 11, 1972, Rev. Scott was employed by the US Postal Service as a mail clerk where he retired January 1997.
July 2020, During the COVID Pandemic, Leroy and Margaret moved to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to live with their daughter Michele. Leroy made St. James his home Church. He loved the St. James Family. He would often say that he loved this Spirit Filled Church. Leroy was a prayer minister in St. James Healing Rooms. He also faithfully attended Night Watch prayer with First Love Fellowship and Monthly worship with Him First Family.
Through the years, Leroy has been a committed Husband and Father. He was always present and available for his family, Church and community.
Leroy was a soldier in the Army of the LORD, faithful, humble and charitable. He loved reading his Bible, worshiping the Lord, and continually prayed for people. Leroy was always available to anyone who needed his spiritual leadership. May his memory be eternal among all those who loved him.
Surviving family include his wife of 64 years, Margaret Scott; four children, Mona Renee Scott, Leroy Scott III and his wife, Dorothy, Rodney Scott Sr. and his wife, Bessie, and Michele C. Scott; grandchildren, Latina Dawkins, Monique Dawkins, Felicia Scott Thorpe, Leroy Scott IV, Rodney Scott Jr., Tighmesha Robinson, Aaron McCoy Scott, and Manuel Alexander Scott; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Leroy was preceded in death by parents and 5 siblings.
