Kelly Shawn Cox was born October 31, 1958, at Tulsa, OK, the son of Joe and Pauline Cox. Kelly passed away on June 2, 2021. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Cox of Bixby OK, his brother and sister-in-law Pat and Karen Cox of Oklahoma City, OK, his sister Paula Roberts of Stillwater, OK, and one nephew and his wife, John and Christi Cox, and 1 great niece and nephew, Emma Cox and Andy Cox. Preceding him in death were his father and mother, Joe and Pauline Cox.
A 1976 graduate of Bixby High School, Kelly received a special award and recognition from Bixby High School for his achievements in the Future Farmers of America. He attended Oklahoma State University majoring in Agricultural Science and Physical Education. Because he wanted to be a farmer, he furthered his education at Okmulgee Tech in Auto Mechanics.
After college he worked for a roofing company and a steel melting company and then worked as a ranch hand. He said, he couldn’t believe he got paid to ride a horse while working. But what most people associated Kelly with was that he was a hay hauler, hauling well over 100,000 bales during the many years that he commercially hauled hay. A local video/TV production company found his life to be so interesting that they filmed a segment called, “Kelly Cox, Hay Hauler.” In his later years he worked as an oil pumper and farmer and raised produce to sell at Farmer’s Market.
Kelly met Joyce while attending a singles meeting at Victory Christian Center. After showing Joyce a picture of his horse that he kept in his Bible, the couple enjoyed their first date at the Casa Bonita Restaurant in Tulsa. They married in 1998.
Kelly served as a volunteer for Victory Christian Center working faithfully in their bus ministry. Then he spent several years in the children’s ministry at Grace Fellowship Church, and then for the last several years at the Green Country Four Square Church in Leonard, OK, Kelly served as an Events Coordinator and occasionally preached at this church. Kelly also furthered his spiritual training at the Victory Bible Institute, as well as the Angeles Bible Institute for a combined 9 years. For the last 5 years, he has been attending Rhema Bible Institute in Broken Arrow, OK, and was very close to graduating from that Bible School when he passed away. Kelly was passionate about reaching people for Christ and genuinely concerned about the salvation of every person he encountered. Kelly’s friends describe him as someone who is “real” and someone who has a “heart of gold” and someone who was “always happy.” He will not soon be forgotten by a host of family and friends who loved him.
