Judy was born on October 27, 1938 in Burlington, Iowa and was the daughter of Glennard and Martha (Smith) Johnson. She was raised on a farm in rural Iowa along with her brother and three sisters. Judy attended college at Avon University in Illinois with her sister Sharon and the two eventually relocated to Boulder, Colorado. It was there that she went on a blind date and introduced to Larry Kindred who became the love of her life.
While serving in the U.S. Army in Germany, Larry and Judy corresponded with written letters to one another daily. Larry proposed over the phone and eventually sold his car to buy Judy a plane ticket for her travels to join him in Heidelberg, Germany where they were married. Their extended honeymoon included travel to many European countries where they enjoyed hiking, skiing, and sight-seeing.
Following Larry’s military service, the couple returned to Colorado and made the Denver area their home where they raised three beautiful daughters – Michele, Heather, & Holly. The Kindred family were devoted members of Calvary Temple and Judy regularly served as a choir member, youth event chaperone, women’s bible study leader, and hosted multiple Sunday school events in their home. In addition to being a homemaker and raising her daughters, she also worked outside of the home as a receptionist/secretary.
Judy loved holidays with Christmas being her favorite. Every year she took delight in decorating, baking, cooking, wrapping beautiful packages, and preparing delectable meals for her friends and family. The remainder of the year, Judy enjoyed playing tennis, running, shopping, playing games, and looking for bargains at garage sales. Always full of energy and devoted to exercise, Judy and Larry regularly took daily walks up until the final days of her precious life.
A four-time cancer survivor, Judy experienced many health related challenges throughout her lifetime. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39 years that eventually led to 18 years of chronic pain. Throughout decades of many health issues, Judy never wavered in her faith and trust in God. Her greatest desire was to know that each of her family members and friends have a personal relationship with Jesus.
As her granddaughter expressed at her home going, we’re confident she’s “speed walking the streets of heaven”!
Surviving family include her husband of 62 years, Larry Kindred; her daughters, Michele Smith and husband, Larry, Heather Stapleton and husband, John, and Holly Hildreth and husband, Karl; grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon, Tarah, Adam, Amanda, Brittany, Brielle, Brianna, as well as 16 beautiful great grandchildren.
