Born January 14, 1929, in Osage County near the community of Fairfax, Juanita was the daughter of Earl and Iva (Hoover) Chitwood. The daughter of a sharecropper in the Great Depression era, Juanita learned about hard work at an early age. She always had a chore list including picking cotton barefoot in the summer. She completed her schooling in Ralston, Oklahoma, and, years later, attended York College in Nebraska.

Following high school, Juanita gained employment as a typist, while living with her grandmother and aunt in Oklahoma City. Juanita was eventually hired by John Cheney as a secretary for Boeing Company in Wichita, Kansas. John and Juanita became a couple and were married January 9, 1954, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Juanita worked at Boeing for over a decade. They had three children: David, Toni, and Janice. She loved her family dearly.

By the teaching of her beloved grandmother, Juanita became a Christian at the age of 14 at a gospel meeting. Through the years, Juanita was actively involved with various congregations in several states which concluded with the Carbondale Church of Christ in Tulsa where she was a member for about 30 years. She was a woman of faith and prayer and brought many others to Christ.
