Fred Fleetwood Obituary

Born December 2, 1944, in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, Fred L. Fleetwood, Jr. was the son of Fred Fleetwood, Sr. and Syble (Meek) Fleetwood. Fred, Jr. would affectionately become known as “Sonny” and was the sixth of seven children born to this family. As a child, Sonny remembered moving around quite a bit, but always lived within the same few miles where he enjoyed spending time with his grandparents and extended family. It was during this time that he learned about working hard on the farm and about his Muscogee Creek heritage of which he was proud.

Following high school, Sonny joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War. Throughout this time, he experienced many adventures and had many stories to tell. Following his honorable discharge, he began working for the Public Service Company of Oklahoma. He would work as a lineman and retired after 40 years of service to the company.

On December 2, 1967, Sonny met Patsy Neasby at a club in Okmulgee. The two began talking which led to their eventual engagement. The two were married on June 29, 1968 and have remained together for over 53 years. In addition to being a loving husband, Sonny was a wonderful father to his daughter, Leslie. Throughout her childhood, Sonny always took time to play and every night they shared in storytelling and prayers. Sonny certainly planted a seed of faith in Christ in Leslie.

In his spare time, Sonny enjoyed gardening and tending to his chickens, ducks, and pigs. As life gave him granddaughters, he loved spending time with them, teaching them life lessons, and making things for them. They each have their special stories about Sonny and will cherish those memories even more now.

Sonny passed away September 4, 2021 at his home in Bixby. He was 76.

Those he leaves to cherish his memory are wife, Patsy Fleetwood; daughter, Leslie Bates and husband, Stacy; grandchildren, Lacey Hibbs and husband, Micki, and Amanda Bates; great grandchildren, Aly and Waylon, whom he loved telling stores and sharing his oranges slices; brother, Jimmy Fleetwood; sister, Wanda Frick and husband, John; sister-in-law, Margaret Fleetwood; along with a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Andrew and Lilly Fleetwood; parents, Fred and Syble Fleetwood; uncle, Roscoe Fleetwood; siblings, Mildred Fleetwood, Jackie Fleetwood, Patsy Lewis, and Mickey Fleetwood; and sister-in-law, Sharron Fleetwood.
