Services to honor and celebrate the life of Dorothy Block will be 10:00 am Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at RiverCrest Chapel and Event Center. She passed away September 15th, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family. She was 77.
Born March 21, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dorothy was the daughter of John C. and Dorothy (Chilton) Stevenson. As soon as she was big enough, Dorothy began babysitting - this included watching her younger sister, Arlene. Dorothy loved taking care of any child within her reach and was often called upon to watch the neighborhood kids! It was certainly her greatest joy in life to become a mother and, later on, a grandmother or “Grandmom” as she was affectionately called.
Dorothy married Robert Bryan Block, Sr., on May 7, 1966, in the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Haddon Heights, New Jersey. The two began dating, at the early age of 17, and knew one another from childhood growing up only seven doors away on a beautiful cul de sac street. Dorothy and Bob remained together until Bob’s passing in June of 2020.
Once married, Dorothy continued watching after children. This supported both her passion and, at the same time, allowed her to earn a little bit of “fun” money. These funds were typically used for vacations and holidays of which Christmas topped the list! In fact, Dorothy was well-known for her delectable variety of Christmas cookies. These cookies had many hopefuls to be on the recipient list. In addition to baking, Dorothy also prepared and served daily meals to her family. She was certainly caring, loving, generous and faithful!
Dorothy’s faithfulness was expressed to her family as she rarely missed any of their activities and was an extremely supportive wife, mother, and grandmother. Her faithfulness was also extended to her Lord as this true servant of God immersed herself in church work through the years. Dorothy taught numerous Sunday school and Bible classes and even served as a deacon and elder. Of course, she could be found helping in the children’s department most Sundays.
When time allowed, or the season was right, Dorothy enjoyed going back to the Jersey shore area. She also loved watching her Philadelphia Phillies and Flyers. Dorothy was a lover of animals and a collector of many things – especially dolls and Boyd’s Bears. Her humor and friendship were cherished by many. Her memory and legacy will live on in her family and friends.
She is survived by: her children: Dorothy Barbosa and husband, Antonio; Robert Block, Jr. and wife, Linda; Melissa Doyle-Waid and husband, Travis; Lisa Legg and husband, Todd; her grandchildren: Tuffy Barbosa, Gabriella Barbosa, Keaton Brown, Amanda Salvatore and husband, Jim, Mario Gutierrez and wife, Andrea, Ana Claire, Daylan and Jacob Block, Abby, Gabrielle, and Micah Waid and Joshua and Jordan Legg; her great-granddaughter, Irie Mariella, as well as, her sister, Arlene Brown and husband, George; brother-in-law, Walter Block and wife, Mary Jane; a special cousin, Bob Haas along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Robert Bryan Block, Sr.
