Abbie (Morris) Barthel

October 24, 1924 ~ April 26, 2020 (age 95)

Abbie L. Barthel passed away Sunday, April 26, 2020. She was 95. Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects to Abbie from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2020 at Bixby Funeral Service. Private family services are being planned.

Abbie Loye Morris Barthel was born on October 24, 1924, in Wortham, TX, the oldest daughter of John and Fannie (Albritton) Morris. She passed from this life on April 26, 2020, in Glenpool, OK, at the age of 95. Abbie lived a long, full life, full of love and devotion to her family and the Lord.

Abbie’s physical beauty was matched only by her kind and gracious spirit that endured through all of life’s challenges. A resilient woman, she survived polio as a teenager, being a widowed mother of an infant at age 19, losing beloved brother Jon Wesley Morris in WWII, and many other difficulties. Through it all, she never lost her faith in God’s goodness nor her winning smile and positive outlook.

She met and married the love of her life, Frank William Barthel, on June 5, 1946. Their marriage was an example to all who knew them of how beautiful a marriage could be that is built on faith and sustained by unconditional love and respect. They were thoroughly devoted to one another and deeply in love throughout their 71 years of marriage. Together they raised two daughters, Jan and Dorothy, who were their joy.

Abbie was known for always being ready to lend a helping hand and loving to all of her family. She was gifted and artistic. She loved to sew beautiful things, crochet, and dabble in crafts. Best of all, she was an outstanding cook, from which her family and friends benefited greatly. She was the nucleus that brought the family together, and there were always good things prepared in her kitchen.

Abbie served the Lord all of her life. Frank was an elder of the Westside Church of Christ in Muskogee for many years, and she served alongside him as an elder’s wife. She and Frank often attended Bible lectureships at various locations to become better teachers and to learn how to bring more people to the Lord. Abbie was a devoted Sunday school and Bible class teacher for elementary school children. She wrote lessons, planned crafts, prepared materials, and taught many children about Jesus and His love for them, a legacy that survives her to this day.

Abbie saw to the needs of her mother and sister until their deaths, and she loved and cared for her husband of 71 years until he passed away. She loved her daughters and her grandchildren with all her passion and being, and her little great-grandchildren were a special delight to her.

The Lord gave Abbie a long and blessed life. We are thankful she left this earth without extended pain and long-suffering. Her spirit has now returned to the Lord, who gave it, and she will be forever blessed. As a gracious and loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, that brings comfort to her daughters, their families, and all who knew Abbie and loved her.

Abbie was preceded in death by her husband, Frank William Barthel, brother Jon Wesley Morris, sister Mary Jane Morris, both of her parents, and granddaughter Brittany Pollman.

She is survived by her daughter Jan (Bill) Pollman, Olathe, KS; daughter Dorothy (Fred) Brown, Bixby, OK; brother Frank (Frances) Morris, Watauga, TX; grandchildren: David Brown, Debbie (Andrew) Stidham, Nikki (Jordan) Wiarda; nieces and nephews: Kelly (Scott) Fletcher; Britt (Whitney) Morris, Ronnie (Margaret) Averyt, Ruth (Pat) Taylor, Patty (Don) Geurin; along with several loving great-grandchildren and great-nephews and nieces.
